What the programme is

The Makers, LLC provides in-home technology help for older people in St. Louis County, Missouri. Each client's family uses a private, invitation-only web portal. The Makers Care Reminders sends messages only to the family members and caregivers of those households who have themselves ticked a box asking for them. Messages are:

  • a once-daily prompt to record what insulin the client was given that morning, answered with two numbers;
  • a reminder that a particular medicine is due, at hours the family sets;
  • a notice that the client has received a phone call or a text message;
  • a notice that the household's monitoring equipment has stopped reporting, and one when it resumes;
  • a single automated acknowledgement when somebody texts our published support number.

There is no marketing and no promotional content of any kind. A typical household receives two to five messages a day.

How consent is collected

One way only: the box below, on the page where somebody accepts an invitation to the portal and chooses their password — https://themakers.com/portal/accept, reached through a one-time link we email them. The box is optional and never pre-ticked, and the mobile number field is hidden until it is ticked, so a number cannot be collected without the consent that goes with it. The date, and the exact wording shown below, are recorded against that person's account.

Insulin prompt, once each morning

Good morning. What insulin did Carol get? Reply with two numbers, slow-acting first, like: 12 4. Reply NONE if she has not had any yet.

Confirmation of what was recorded, in reply to the above

Written down for Carol: 16 slow-acting and 12 fast-acting at 9:18 AM. Reply UNDO to take it back.

Medicine reminder, at each time the family sets

Carol: time for Metformin (500 mg, one tablet). With food.

Notice that she has had a text

Carol got 2 texts, 3:14 PM: Lisa Mills, (314) 555-0142 (unknown). Nothing of what was said is in this message.

Notice that her equipment has gone quiet

Carol's calls and texts have not reached the portal since Thursday 24 September at 1:28 PM. The Mac at home is probably off or asleep. Nothing is lost; it catches up.
